A static events barge/floating Livery Hall at Swan Lane for the Honourable Company of Master Mariners

While the RRG applauds the work of the Honourable Company, we have concerns about the environmental impacts of this project, which is the same size as the Oceandiva, though with two extra decks. We are worried about the size of the vessel and the fact that crucial environmental impact analyses are missing or merely scoped in the initial application. There is no clarity on the number of guests that would be entertained aboard at full capacity. A static vessel replacing an active pier is also contrary to City of London and London Plan policies. Concerns about these matters, and others, have been expressed by the Greater London Authority (GLA), the Environment Agency (EA) and the Port of London Authority (PLA). There has been criticism of the design – a pastiche of a 1920s ocean-going luxury yacht.

The RRG attempted to work with HCMM, even facilitating a public meeting at Southwark Cathedral so the Honourable Company could present their project. But in the end HCMM rejected the RRG’s advice and our requests for environmental conditions embodied in the application.

See the Master Mariners’ application.

The RRG’s initial objection can be seen on the City of London’s Planning Portal.

New factors have emerged since that was lodged, including the fact that this area of the City’s foreshore is now reserved for heat barges to serve the Square Mile’s electrical needs, so a second representation is being drafted.

There is still time to lodge a representation on the portal link above.
